Gosh is wordability the work of one person? so many interests and interesting judgments.
A pity more people don't know about it.
Sorry not to linger.

This reminded me of something in Scholes's Oxford Companion, something which I hadn't looked at in decades. I wouldn't be surprised if you had the same ninth edition, 1955, as me. In Plate 132, facing page 753, there's a photo of the ORGANIST OF KUFSTEIN (in the Tyrol) it says, and goes on to say that he plays to A WHOLE REGION every midday. I wonder who those inhabitants of the REGION feel who prefer, say, The Rolling Stones.
It's mentioned here: http://www.auracher-loechl.at/en-tyrol_austria-kufstein_fortress.shtml

I noticed on RN this morning someone at the Victorian Bushfire Commission - I think it was Counsel Assisting - speaking of communities 'impacted' by the fires. This one is lost.

Hmm. I've been listening to Tea for Two all my life. I just tried to play it on the piano by ear, and after 45 minutes ... gave up trying to work out how to get out of the middle 8, and went in search of the music.

Comment on Chinoiserie and the wicked West by Emile de Bruijn

Chinoiserie is often characterised as 'merely' decorative, but, like you, I think that is too simplistic. In the seventeenth and early eighteenth century China was seen in the west as an exemplary society. It was admired for its well regulated government and philosphers like Leibniz urged Europeans to learn from China. As a consequence, chinoiserie imagery was occasionally used as a political symbol, denoting 'rational government' or 'virtuous morals'. It was only later that China came to be seen as a quaint country where history stood still and chinoiserie became correspondingly more escapist.

Thanks to you, the little spam I get on my blog is easily deleted with Akismet. And I have to say that I get no spam at all using Google mail. It does a much better job than the University's program.

An odd thing about your entry is that the URL to which you link spells the confectioner's name wrongly. The actual site gets its right: http://www.laduree.fr/ So there was a possibility that the joke was in the error. But I'm sure you're referring to Bergson. I did attempt to write a joke en français, but I lack the intestinal fortitude to send it.
